Please be advised that any structure intended for swimming or 'recreational bathing' that is capable of holding water 24" or more in-depth is regulated by the Building Code and requires a permit before installation.
This regulation includes storable pools (often in blue vinyl) of a temporary nature. The code requirements for a safety barrier for these pools are the same as for permanent above ground or inground pools.
Since the cost of the required safety barrier often exceeds the cost of the pool, it might be wise to speak with the Building Department before you purchase the pool. The Building Department can explain the code requirements and permit process. Contact the Building Department at (860) 487-3123.
When is a Building Permit Required?
Any owner or authorized agent who intends to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, demolish or change the occupancy of a building or structure, or to erect, install, enlarge, alter, repair, remove, convert or replace any electrical, gas, mechanical or plumbing system, the installation of which is regulated by the building code, or to cause any such work to be done, shall first make application to the Building Official and obtain the required permit.
This list of required inspections is meant to provide guidance and to augment the required inspections that are part of the building code. This does not limit the Building Official from requiring additional inspections as needed to ensure substantial compliance with the applicable codes and referenced standards.
Forms and rebar and excavation for footings and piers
Rebar for foundation and retaining walls
Radon mitigation elements
All underground utilities including plumbing, drainage, gas and electrical including the well
Nailing for all sheathing and braced wall sections
Air barrier prior to siding
Complete rough including framing, electrical, plumbing, HVAC
Electrical service including conduit before backfill
Chimney throat inspections
All fuel fired appliances and venting including pellet and wood stoves
Sheetrock installation prior to taping when part of a braced wall section
Ice and water shield
Final inspection which includes grading a minimum 6” pitch in 10’ away from structure
For other than residential applications additional items will require inspection. Some of those would be for site improvements and others would be for elements not generally found in residential construction. These types of issues will be managed on a case by case basis and we are happy to discuss with our contractors ahead of anticipated inspections.
